Retreats
Class retreats build bonds that last all four years.

Community Meeting
Every week, about 400 students and staffulty gather for a student-run Community Meeting: a Moment of Reflection anyone may share, Moments of Talent, group presentations, and two to three senior speeches. Every senior gives one before graduating.
It’s also where you’ll hear the snapping that signals agreement. Along with Tea and Toast in the Commons and the piles of backpacks on the Central Plaza, it’s one of the traditions that make SA “so SA.”
Student life
Dances, back-the-pack spirit games, and movie nights, run by students, for students.

Class retreats build bonds that last all four years.

Mixed-grade groups of about 10 students and one faculty advisor, meeting weekly: a home away from home.

Classes earn points in dodgeball, pumpkin carving, lip sync, and more, and the winning class celebrates.

Homecoming, Winter Formal, the Spring Dance, and Prom.

Students vote on the film and watch outdoors in the amphitheater, hosted by the Student Leadership Council.
Leadership
Nearly 45% of our students hold a leadership position. As Warren Bennis put it, “Becoming a leader is synonymous with becoming yourself.”

Beyond the classroom
Some of the ways students compete, build, and serve beyond the classroom.

The #1 Policy Debate team in the Golden Gate Speech Association, four years in a row. Students compete in policy and congressional debate, interpretation, and original oratory.

Founded in 2017, Ellipse 6814 brings together more than twenty students from every grade in five sub-teams, and has reached the World Championships.

Our Center for Community Engagement runs a Nonprofit Fair, Community Engagement Day, and quarterly school-wide volunteer days.
Belonging
We continually work to ensure that every student at Sonoma Academy thrives. We believe learning occurs best in a connected community, one that welcomes difference, advances equity, and engages local and global communities.
Student affinity groups include Asian, Black Student Union, Jewish, Latinx, LGBTQ+, and Multiracial Multiethnic People of Color, alongside a Queer Straight Alliance and a staffulty DEI Working Group.

Wellbeing
A licensed counselor is on campus four days a week for individual students and small groups. Our Student Success Team meets twice a week, and every 9th grader is mentored by trained seniors.
Our Honor Code was developed by students and staffulty together, and its illustrations hang in most classrooms. We consider it a dialogue that continues to develop over time.

Daily lunch
Lunch is included in tuition. Our food partner, SAGE, makes fresh meals from scratch in small batches, with vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, and international options every day.
Expect daily entrees, soups, salad and sandwich bars, fresh fruit, and build-your-own bars, with composting, recycling, and a growing share of local and organic food.
Visit
The best way to feel the SA community is to spend a day in it.
