Roy was born in Healdsburg, grew up largely in Mexico City, and moved to the Chicago area for school at age 13. He earned a soccer scholarship to Northern Illinois University, studied Criminal Justice, and joined a police academy. He later decided policing wasn't for him and returned to Sonoma County.

A sister-in-law who worked at the school told him about a part-time job. He dressed formally on his first day, then realized the school was unlike other workplaces. The part-time role soon became full-time.

He has worked at Sonoma Academy since 2013, in Admissions and as boys soccer coach. "What sets us apart from other schools is the people here."

His favorite part of the week is Community Meeting, which he describes as a free concert showcasing student talent. He proctors the SSAT, enjoys coaching, and says students make his day.
