Chris Ziemer

Director of Athletics & PE; Girls Soccer Head Coach

Sonoma State University, BS

chris.ziemer@sonomaacademy.org

Chris most enjoys being on the field, coaching, and working with student-athletes and teams. He coordinates physical education exploratories for novices, supports elite athletes preparing for college, and is known for his humor and warmth.

He joined Sonoma Academy in its second year, when the athletic program was just starting. He was running soccer organizations full-time and coached the girls soccer team until a permanent coach was found. He enjoyed the team's families and the challenge of working with athletes at different experience levels.

Soon after that first season, he was offered the Director of Athletics & Physical Education role. He had planned to keep running soccer organizations or pursue college coaching, but his father encouraged him to take the full-time job. He is glad he did, almost 20 years later.

He left high school during his junior year to pursue a professional soccer career in Germany. He later earned his GED and graduated from college after his playing career ended. His father was a teacher, and he has always valued education.

Outside of work, he spends time with family, travels, and follows soccer, including watching his children play, coaching, and writing about soccer worldwide.

His family has deep ties to the school. Two daughters are Sonoma Academy alumni (Sally '17 and Gabby '20), and his young son cheers for the school at Ziemer Field. He values the school's passion, community, and extracurricular opportunities.
